I’ve learned some things this week, and it’s my 50th blog, so I thought I’d share. #1: my “spell check” doesn’t recognize the word "blog." (!?!?!) No suggestions, no spelling fix, they (the computer’s brains) think I mean something else, completely different, as if I'm speaking a different language. How nice to be more (or at least THINK I'm more) sophisticated verbally than the machine I’m using to verbalize…
Next (or #2 if you’re counting at home, or “B” if you’re trying to be difficult…) having family in town is a great way to see the city in which you live, through a brand new shiny prism. I think the next time you’re bored, ask your family, if they were visiting, what would they like to see around where you live. In my experience, which is the only experience I’m intimately experienced with, they’ll tell you a few of the touristy things that you probably think are below you since you feel you’re a “native" of (insert city here…) but you’ll have missed out in being a tourist in your own city. I started comedy in San Francisco, and never went to Alcatraz… WOW, now I have to visit just to finally see it. How does this relate to comedy, well, don't rush me... OK rush me if you want to...
I think now and again, you should see your ACT in a whole new light too. (DON'T call your family about it!!!) I’ve heard various suggestions to finding new life in an act that you continually do. Mixing up the material’s “regular” order is a way to keep it new and exiciting, but the mainstay for me, is to try something (or better… some "things…" ) new. It’s very exciting to build up to the new bit, and sometimes that excitement (ESPECIALLY if the new bit works) can carry a whole set, or show. MY suggestion (if you’re working and/or it’s the set of your life) to do the material you’ve practiced and have confidence in, but for a set that’s not a career maker, add some new spice and see where it goes. I suggest you have a go-to anchor to tie this new joke back to main part of your show. A sort of "failsafe" just in case. Usually the idea, (well… MY idea) is to try a new bit with a strong joke/bit as back up.
That’s it for #50. Thanks for reading, I have to go write a new bit to try, and figure where in my town (this little burg called L.A.) to go see next, and to update my spell check to accept the word “blog."
Keep Laughing
